Where we stand

A Green Transformation For Harrogate & Knaresborough

We all need to work together to deliver improvements to our streets, open spaces and our environment.

Local Policy

We are into desperate territory when it comes to our climate. As time goes by without us taking radical action to halt, let alone reverse, climate change we continue to create a legacy of environmental chaos for future generations and a crisis that will decimate communities around the world, cause irreversible damage to our environment and irrevocably change how we live.

It is vital that together we demand of government and big business that they wake up to this crisis, invest in our environment and in our communities rather than continue to destroy them. We are committed to working together to fight for these changes.

To do this right in Harrogate & Knaresborough, we need to speak to schools, charities, residents of all ages and businesses to hear what the priorities and ideas are from across our communities. We need to collaborate, forge a consensus and create clear proposals for what each of us can do, in our homes and in our neighbourhoods and to articulate our demands of national government and global corporations. Genuine and radical change in Harrogate & Knaresborough will require everyone – council, residents, hospitals, businesses, local organisations – to get involved, have their say and take action.

  • Implementing a range of sustainable transport measures will not only reduce congestion, but improve air quality.
  • We oppose the introduction of extra charges for green waste and will support more (not less!) recycling.
  • We will also oppose any plans to start fracking in Harrogate.
  • We will provide the best possible local clean and green services within available resources.
  • We will champion local clean and green activities, supporting the combined efforts of partners and communities.
  • We will support residents and communities in caring for their local environment and neighbourhoods.

National Policy

Investing in our environment is investing in our future. We will defend and extend existing environmental protections. We will champion sustainable farming, food and fishing by investing in and promoting skills, technology, market access and innovation.

The Conservatives broke their promise to be the greenest government ever. They have allowed fracking in national parks, evaded their responsibilities on air Tuality and cut the funding for ȵood defences. The future of our farming, food and fishing industries hangs in the balance, to be used as leverage in Brexit negotiations.

Only a Labour government will prioritise a sustainable, long-term future for our farming, fishing and food industries, fund robust ȵood resilience, invest in rural and coastal communities, and guarantee the protection and advancement of environmental quality standards.

The Conservatives’ threatened ‘bonfire of red tape’ is a threat to our environmental protections and to the quality of our lives. Their record on combating climate change and environmental damage has been one of inaction and broken promises.

The balance needs resetting: our air is killing us, our farms face an uncertain future, our fish stocks are collapsing, our oceans are used as dumping grounds, and our forests, green belt, national parks, Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Sites of Special Scientific Interest are all under threat.
